Sea Island, Georgia
After the Major Championships have been won and numerous tournament checks have been cashed, one of the most exhilarating moments for a golfer is when he or she receives “The Hall Call.”
This is, of course, when World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum President Jack Peter contacts the incoming members to congratulate them on their impending enshrinement. It is also the beginning of many interactions that the Hall will have with the new inductees.
In addition to a visit to the Museum in St. Augustine, one of the most significant interactions the Hall of Fame will have with its new inductees happens during the “artifact pick-up” process. During this time, staff members from the Museum travel to the home of each inductee to secure individual trophies, awards, letters, pin flags and a host of other personal memorabilia that will eventually be housed in the inductee’s respective locker and personal exhibit inside the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum.
This personal interaction enables the Museum staff, generally led by the Historian, Curator and a member of the Communications Team, to gain valuable insight into the inductee’s personal and professional life. As each artifact is being packed into boxes, the inductee reflects and shares memories associated with the items.
It is during these artifact pick-ups that the Hall secures some of the most fascinating items. From Raymond Floyd’s Louisville Slugger wooden bat, to Nancy Lopez’s Barbie doll, or Mark O’Meara’s fishing rod and letterman jacket and all the way to Phil Mickelson’s ping pong paddle, each item is unique, accurately depicting the personality of each member.
In advance of this year’s Induction Ceremony, set to be held Tuesday, September 26 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the Hall of Fame picked up artifacts from the Inductees. The team stopped by Davis Love III’s beautiful Sea Island, Georgia home on Friday, July 28th. Greeted with a relaxed, yet excited Love III, the crew was eager to see the collection and hear the memories made by the man himself. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at Davis Love III’s most impressive golf collection.
